Convergence Conversation - brought to you by Intellect

'Here' and 'there'

I'm listening to William Gibson's podcast on The Conversations Network and he just threw away a quote that I thought worth preserving. He was talking about how the notions of "here" and "there" are changing because now everyone is connected. He said "'There is where your iPhone can't get a signal". Wonderful. When your iPhone can get a signal everywhere, though, then where is 'there'? I have a suspicion that 'there' will be something to do not with connection technology but with disconnection technology, changing from a passive concept to an active one. In other words, 'here' and 'there' will have a flexible, shifting boundary between them and that boundary will be set by the individual using keys and certificates, passwords and biometrics.</p>
