Up in the Clouds
An extremely interesting article posted on the BBC website today by Bill Thompson regarding cloud computing.
In simple terms cloud computing is the process of businesses storing their information at another organisations data centre, as opposed to their own desktops or local servers. This then in turn frees up resources and memory.
Much has been said regarding the benefits of cloud computing, and rightly so. However Bill raises some intriguing questions about the barriers of cloud computing and the inherent dangers of data sharing. The danger lies in the breaches of confidential information highlighted by the numerous data breaches scattering the news in recent years.
With superfast broadband on the way cloud computing will become more widespread for a vast array of companies looking to downsize on costs and increase in efficiency. As Bill Thompson elucidates in his post, the importance of codes of practice and legislative procedures to contain those companies offering cloud services must be understood and enforced sooner rather than later.
Is the future of business really in the clouds?
