UK Broadband: Facts and Thoughts
by BenoƮt FELTEN of Yankee Group
I will be in London tomorrow (and will witness my first mass scale UK strike; it will feel just like home, I guess!) I just scanned some of the recent press, blogs and other sources of information on UK broadband and FTTx future to refresh my brain on the situation. Since this gives me the opportunity to catch-up on some of the happenings in the UK, I thought I'd share. The first interesting aspect is that the BBC seems to have decided that UK broadband wasn't cutting it. Things that are in it: MMS, cut & paste, 3MP camera, more battery life, compass, video, more memory, faster processor
Things that aren't in it: HSUPA, flash, 5 or 8MP camera, WVGA screen (800x480), multitasking (I think), slide-out QWERTY pad
My take is that it's probably enough for many existing owners of the 2G iPhone to upgrade (most of the 3G owners still have another 12 months contract to run anyway). More...

by Peter Shearman of Broadband Stakeholder Group
Last week the Communications Consumer Panel published research that found that public support for broadband is strong, with over 80% of respondents believing that it should be everyone’s right to have access to broadband, regardless of where they live. 42% of those questioned who do not have broadband believe access is essential. This would appear to be an impressive level of support, and reflects UK citizens’ position as the most active broadband population in Europe. However, this week Ofcom offered a slightly different version of events. More...

The Future of Broadcast Revenues...
by Ved Sen of ThinkPLANK
Broadcasters are likely to be impacted by brands looking for alternative ways to reach consumers, directly over the net, or via alternative mechanisms to interruptive, media driven ads.
For existing broadcast business, this will lead to innovations and new models and a focus on assets rather than channels...
