A data point: Ofcom's communication market report showed 3G increasingly substituting for DSL in the home. The data is presented in a slightly obtuse manner - 32% of 3G "dongle" users are using the service to sub for DSL - roughly 2m dongles in the UK consumer market, so 600k 3G from a total of 15m broadband connections - 4% market share captured in 18 months.
Interpretation (after 2 seconds of thought!):
Revenues from (mobile) broadband are massively disproportionate to the bandwidth used - same as in fixed line. Outwardly, this is another nudge towards netco/ servco separation - MNOs are becoming more like last mile data carriers, although they retain a strong presence in "products" for now (primarily because of the British public's obsession with free handsets). Hi, my name is Matthew Guest and I'm a career strategy consultant, specialising in telecoms and media. My experience has been gathered over a number of years; most recently with Detica, but also with strategy boutique, RKS. I joined Deloitte's TMT Strategy team in November 2007.
My industry experience includes projects for several major UK Telcos (T-Mobile, Vodafone, BT and Three), an online insurer (eSure), a couple of automobile manufacturers (Ford and VW) and their tier 1 suppliers. I've also run and participated in projects for BP and certain "niche" medical product suppliers. Outside of consulting, a number of my startup companies have won entrepreneurship awards, venture capital funding and have been sold to larger industry players.
Outside of work I enjoy writing, cooking, sport, driving (and collecting) high-performance cars. An avid Liverpool supporter, I played football for my University and now enjoy the game socially.
