Looks like Telecom Italia has maneuvered its way into a very favourable position that bodes well neither for competition nor for FTTx... Tim posts about a municipal FTTH project in Brisbane that seems set to go forward despite (or maybe because of) the current NBN plans.

Telstra excluded from NBN bid!

In a stunning move this week-end, the Australian government rejected Telstra's bid for the Next Generation Broadband network deployment due to a lack of compliance. All submitted bids had to meet a number of conditions, including a description of how small and medium Australian businesses would be contracted to roll-out part of the network. Telstra's submission was a high level letter that suggested Telstra would respond in more detail if a number of conditions (the guarantee that no structural separation would be undertaken, the ability to only cover 80% of the territory, etc.) were met by the government.

Soundbite fighting at Fiber Corral

I have previously mentioned the dispute between Free and Orange in France about how multi-tenant buildings should be fibered up. It's an important question, of course, but it seemed to build to a disproportionate importance compared to other NGA related issues. Well, this week while I was in California, it escalated to a bitter gunfight of accusations and "it's not me, it's them..." in the French press. So let's summarise the situation: In Episode One, French incumbent Orange and #3 broadband provider SFR/Neuf signed a deal about in-building connections that went against the recommendations of the regulator.

If you see California, you're almost home

A quick update of my Californian adventure. Sunday was an amazing day, starting really early (as jetlag dictates) by a breakfast in Chinatown with David Isenberg. I had never eaten Dim Sum for breakfast, not to mention chicken legs, but it was amazing and really tasty. David then walked me through Chinatown where I purchased chineses hats for my kids which I subsequently forgot in David's car. We ended up at the Cafe de la Presse for a coffee and interview. At lunchtime, I met with David Piehler, Vice President Access Architecture, from Alphion, a company who produces and sells FTTH access equipment.

A peek into the future of innovation

Last Thursday, Alcatel Lucent was holding its Innovation Days 2008 in Paris. This is, as the name suggests, an annual event which gives Bell Labs the opportunity to present to Alcatel Lucent employees, analysts and the press a set of technologies, applications or service concepts that it thinks are the most promising. As an analyst, part of your job is to anticipate future trends, but it's not always easy because few vendors and/or telcos are as open about their own approach to the future as you'd like.

Early Lessons from The City

I landed in San Francisco yesterday, around lunchtime. I knew if I wanted to adapt to local time (it's a nine hour time difference with Paris) I had to stay awake until 9 PM or later. So I decided to hit the town: the only way to stay awake is to do something. My hotel is on Van Ness and Geary. I wanted to go to a "big and tall" clothes shop, because I'm one of the two (you get to choose) but the concierge at the hotel directed me to the wrong area of town. When I realised that it was too far to walk back to the shop, and I had planned to hit Amoeba Music, so I went in that direction on foot, knowing that the 71 bus would get me there.

Off to California

I'm leaving for California in a few hours. I'm deliberately pushing off my sleeping hours here so that recovering from the jet lag is made easier there. In theory.Anyway, I'm already meeting a few of you there, but still open for more connections, especially on Sunday when I'll be mostly free (apart from lunch and Amoeba records.) I might not write all that much next week as a consequence of my travels. Expect an in-depth piece on a pretty amazing innovation even I attended this week, and some odds

Orange: Autumn/Winter Collection

For the last couple of years, Orange's short-term innovation (as in, innovation that is rapidly applicable to commercial products) has been driven by a "collection" approach, just like Fashion. Every semester, the product teams must present internally, and then externally as projects are validated, the products and services that will be coming out of their labs soon. This year a video has been shot of the process (the presentation to the press and analysts happened last week, I think) which gives you an overall idea of where they are going products and service wise.

Fiber to the New Dehli home

This has been on my radar for a couple of weeks, with snippets of information (if that) here and there, and I was waiting to find out more to post about it. Since no more seems forthcoming, I decided to revert the logic and write about what little I have in the hope that readers will contribute more! So, the "news" is that Indian operator MTNL has announced an FTTH roll-out in New Dehli. There's a source here, and there have been others, equally streamlined. I'd really like to find
